Passbook is one such thing that comes to our mind when we are visiting bank. Passbook, cheques are always the basic needs of our banking transaction. One is for recording what you do with your bank account and cheque is what enables you to withdraw money from your account.
What is a passbook?
A passbook is just a booklet which come along when opening a new savings bank account. Its a mini ledger that keeps a record of your transaction. Other than that, bank provide the details of account holder in the passbook.
With the advent of digital banking, online passbook is now available too.
Why passbook is considered important?
Passbook is an important thing because its the owner’s document. You may find the details of account in it.
Account holder’s name, address and account number will be printed in it. You may also find details of bank and it’s branch code along with other number such as IFSC.
In case of non-cheque account, passbook is the only means to access and withdraw funds from account.
Losing passbook or cheques is a normal thing and it happens to all of us. One day or another. If you have lost your passbook and you are unable to access your account, here’s what you need to do
- Duplicate Passbook: A duplicate passbook is given to customer who has lost the passbook. It is exactly same as the original passbook, the only difference is that you may see the marking of duplicate on the first page of it.
- Contact Your Bank: Losing passbook needs to be notified to your bank immediately. You must notify the bank immediately and request for a replacement. You may get it on the same day, in fact, it may take 10 to 15 minutes to get a new passbook. Make sure to check the details printed on it. If there are any errors, make a request for correction.
- Bank Verification: In the process of applying for a duplicate passbook, bank may ask you to provide few documents for verification purpose. It may be your identity card such as Voter Card, Aadhaar Card, Driver’s License, Passport etc. But know that, your details are proper in your ID card.
